The Division of Street Maintenance maintains the bridges and 660 miles of roadway throughout the city of Dayton.  The Division is also responsible for snow and ice removal, leaf collection, gutter cleaning, street sweeping, pothole repair, street paving, fallen tree removal, and dead animal pick-up.

Functions of the Division of Street Maintenance:

  • Street Repair and Paving Coordination -- Street and alley repairs and preventive maintenance are provided throughout the City. Computerized Pavement Management System and onsite inspections determine streets to be resurfaced. View the current paving lists.
  • Street Sweeping (February - October, weather permitting) -- Over 12,000 miles of street sweeping is performed on City streets each year. Residential streets are swept twice annually. Thoroughfares are swept six (6) times annually. Expressways are swept three (3) times annually. The downtown Central Business District is swept each weeknight.
  • Leaf Collection -- Crews make four leaf collection cycles through each city neighborhood in the Fall.  Leaves must be placed in biodegradable bags and placed at the curb line during your scheduled collection periods.
  • Boulevards and Expressway Medians -- Cleaning, mowing, seeding and fertilizing services are provided for boulevards and medians. Street Maintenance maintains over 50 miles of expressway medians and roadsides.
  • Snow & Ice Control -- Primary streets and expressways are cleared first in order to ensure safe travel throughout the City, then residential streets are cleared. There are 47 established routes in the City of Dayton for plowing or treating snow and ice. 12,000 tons of salt and 36,000 gallons of liquid deicer are applied during a typical winter.
  • Traffic Control Devices are provided for permitted special events, parades, block parties, etc., as requested by the Dayton Police Department.
  • Traffic Sign Shop • 333-2444 -- Over 4,000 traffic signs are repaired and/or replaced each year.  The shop manufactures approximately 2,000 signs annually. More than 2,500,000 lineal feet of traffic control pavement striping are applied annually. The Traffic Sign Shop also services and repairs the downtown parking meters.
  • Vacant Land Management • 333-4802 -- Provides basic lot maintenance for lots neglected and/or abandoned by property owners. Costs for this service are billed to the property owner.
  • Dead Animal Pickup • 333-4800 -- Provided for animals on public property.
