History of the Dayton Police Department
The Dayton Police Department’s history pre-dates Ohio´s statehood. On June 10, 1797, Constable Cyrus Osborne was the first of many appointments to the law enforcement ranks protecting Dayton’s citizens.
From there, the Dayton Police Department has grown into one of the largest police departments in the nation, with over 400 sworn officers. This places the department in the top five percent of the country’s law enforcement agencies.
This sizeable allotment of sworn personnel allows the department to provide numerous specialized units and bureaus to quickly and effectively deal with problems.
