Current Term: 2010-2014

Previous Terms: 2002-2006; 2006-2010

Commissioner Joey D. Williams, a Dayton native, was elected to the Dayton City Commission in 2001, after serving two terms as a member of the Dayton School Board and being active in numerous community causes. As a City elected official, he supports an agenda that includes enhancing neighborhoods and creating jobs through economic development, ensuring safety and strong City services, improving education, and helping to bridge the digital divide.

Williams' experience as a local banking executive and community activist has prepared him well to address the challenges facing Dayton. His recognitions include receiving Dayton's Top 40 Under 40 honor, being selected as a Parity 2000 Top 10 African-American Male, and selection to the Central State University Alumni Hall of Fame.

A graduate of Dayton Public Schools, Commissioner Williams served eight years on the Dayton Board of Education, being first elected in 1993 and re-elected in 1997. While on the Board of Education he served two years as President and two years the Vice President. He also served as Chairman of the Education Committee for City of Dayton's long-range strategic planning process, called CitiPlan 20/20. Commissioner Williams is a firm believer in preparing our young people and our community to function well in the age of information technology. He is committed to encouraging public and private sector support for educational and training opportunities and stimulating business investment to enable Dayton citizens to be part of the growing digital economy, regardless of race or social status.

A major initiative for Commissioner Williams has been his fight to stop violence, particularly youth violence. Recognizing the need for a collaborative approach to solving this issue, Williams teamed with Commissioner Lovelace to put on the Youth Anti-Violence Seminar in 2005. They followed up on the seminar by working with an Ad-Hoc Committee of local leaders to develop a final researched report of findings and recommendations. These recommendations are being used to help shape the direction of youth development and fighting youth violence.

Commissioner Williams has been involved in a variety of community organizations, including the West Dayton YMCA, Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Board, the Wright Computer Connection and the United Way Board of Directors.

Commissioner Williams is married and has two sons. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Central State University and received a Masters of Business Administration from Ohio State University. He is President of the Dayton office of Chase Bank.
